Computer and Internet Use Policy

Statement of Purpose

The goal of the library is to meet the informational, recreational, cultural and educational needs of all members of the community in a variety of formats. In an effort to meet technological advances and changing needs of the community, the Universal City Public Library offers free access to the Internet to our library patrons. This does not replace any of the library resources necessary to meet any individuals’ needs. Use of the Internet expands the collection and it is within that context that the library offers access to the Internet. While offering access to a wealth of enriching material, it also enables access to some materials that may be offensive or disturbing to some individuals. The library is not responsible for the accuracy, reliability or appropriateness of information found through use of the Internet. Patrons shall be responsible for their use of any information obtained through electronic means at the library.

To protect our youth from access to obscenity, child pornography, or material harmful to minors, the City Council of Universal City elected to filter all the library public access computers. Due to the nature of filtering software, the library uses these filters with the knowledge that not all objectionable sites will be blocked. The library staff will override the filtering software for adult patrons upon request. For youth under 18, the parent/guardian must be present to request the filtering software be overridden for their child.
