Planning and Zoning Commission

Created in 1961, this Commission is considered a quasi-judicial board. Its meetings are held as necessary on the first Monday of each month at 6:00 pm. The meetings are open to the public.

Membership


The commission is composed of nine members who are required to be resident citizens and qualified voters of the city. Members are appointed by the mayor, subject to confirmation by a majority of city council.

Powers and Duties


  • To perform the duties imposed upon the commission by state law;
  • To make recommendations to the city council regarding requests for variances to the platting or subdivision regulations;
  • To make recommendations to the city council regarding changes in zoning criteria and zoning districts;
  • To recommend to the city council approval or disapproval in whole or in part, of plans and re-plats within the city or its planning area and to recommend any conditions or contingencies for said plans, plats, and re-plats;
  • To recommend to the city council approval or disapproval in whole or in part, any change in zoning criteria or zoning district and to recommend any conditions or contingencies for such zoning changes;
  • To make recommendations to the city council regarding long term and short term growth and development for Universal City and its planning area and develop specific recommendations for revisions to the comprehensive plan and periodic updates and recommendations;
  • To perform such other duties as may be prescribed by the city council or state law.
